Speech & Language: Different Treatment Areas

Speech

Speech is how we use our mouths to say specific sounds and words.

A child with speech problems may:

  • Have difficulty with specific sounds or letters.
  • Be difficult to understand.
  • May not sound like others his age.
  • May have difficulty combining sounds or saying certain words.
  • May stutter or get “stuck” on words.
  • Could be non-verbal or minimally verbal.

Language

Language includes what we understand and express to communicate with others, get our needs met, and share ideas.

A child with language problems may:

  • Have difficulty following directions or listening to books.
  • Use limited words or word combinations.
  • Have reduced vocabulary and grammar.
  • Demonstrate challenges telling stories and explaining.
  • Have difficulties using language with peers to socialize and negotiate.

I believe the most effective therapy is individualized and not “one size fits all.” Successful, enjoyable treatment involves the intentional application of a variety of evidence-based methods. Among others, I am trained in the following programs: Meaningful Speech, PROMPT, and SPEAK OUT!
